Prevalence of Gastrointestinal Helminths in Dogs in Wolaita

A total of 130 dogs in Wolaita Awraja, Sidamo Administrative Region, were examined postmortem for gastrointestinal parasite helminths. Out of these 89 (68.46 percent) were found positive for Ancylostoma caninum, 68 (23.48 percent) for Taenia spp.; and 29 (22.3 percent) for Echinococcus granulosus. Spirocerca lupi occurred only in 22 (22 percent) of the adult dogs. In contrast, Toxocara canis occurred in 15 (50 percent) of the juvenile dogs but infrequently in the older ones. Monospecific infection was observed in 20 (15 percent) of the dogs and multiple infection in 110 (85 percent). A. caninum was the most common species found in multiple infections. The sex of the host had no significant influence on the prevalence of infection. E. granulosus had the highest figure for average worm burden. Spirometra was a new finding for the country.
