Prospects for the enhancement of the leucocytic response in the mammary gland

Mastitis is characterized by an increase of leukocytes in the mammary gland and milk. As high leukocyte numbers are associated with subclinical mastitis, a decrease in their number is sought. However, from the standpoint of defense high leukocyte numbers in the mammary gland would be beneficial. Artificial increase of leukocyte numbers and prevention of mastitis with intramammary devices or with vaccines had not had the expected results. The cytokines increase the production, the mobilization, the influx into the mammary gland and the activity of phagocyte and in the future they will be used extensively in the prevention and the treatment of mastitis.
