Incidence of Sarcoptes scabiei infection of swine in certain regions of Macedonia and Thessalia

An abattoir survey was conducted, from October through December 1990, to determine, for the first time in any part of this country, the incidence of sarcoptic mites Sarcoptes scabiei in slaughtered swine. Toward this end, the ears (one per animal) of 509 slaughtered pigs were examined in 5 different abattoirs, i. e. Lagadas, Vassilika, Sochos, Kilkis and Karditsa. Numbers of samples from these abattoirs ranged from 15 (Sochos) to 363 (Lagadas). The procedure of examination consisted of scraping the skin of the inner surface of each ear by means of a dermatologic curet, along with any existing cerumen, placing the material in a 15 ml centrifuge tube with 10 ml of KOH 5%, incubating at 37 C for 24 hours, centrifuging at 1500 r. p. m., and finally examining the sediment microscopically at X80. S. scabiei mites were found in 298 (58,5%) of the 509 samples examined. Prevalence by abattoir was 56,1%, 62,5%, 33,3%, 90,4% and 64,2%, respectively. Demodex phylloides mites were also found in 49 (9,6%) of the samples examined. Prevalence of these mites by abattoir ranged from 0% to 10,4%.
