Congenital protosystemic shunts in the dog. A review of the literature and case report

In the first part of this paper a review of congenital portosystemic shunts in the dog concerning their etiopathogenesis, clinical signs, diagnosis and treatment is attempted. A case of congenital intrahepatic shunt is also reported involving a 3-month old female German shepherd crossbred. The case is presented because the animal had been showing central nervous system signs immediately after being fed with high protein diet. The main laboratory findings were a low blood urea lever and a high ammonia basal value in the blood. These almost diagnostic findings were further confirmed by the ammonia tolerance test and liver ultrasonography. The animal was put on a low protein diet, lactulose and neomycin. This conservative treatment decreased the frequency and intensity of clinic signs of the dog.
