Swine influenza - New information and present status in Greece

Swine influenza (SI) is a disease of the respiratory system which is due to a type A Ortomyxovirus and causes severe economical losses in the pig industry of many countries, including Greece. In this study, reported are all the updating data relative to SI and is emphasized the presence of the human serotype H3N2, despite the "classis" H1N1, from outbreaks of the disease in Europe and in Greece as well. Especially in the winter 1990-91 and after an epidemiological and serological survey of SI which has been done in several regions of the country, the presence of both serotypes has been proved. In relation with the control of this infectious disease, especially in the large industrial pig units, proposed are certain measures and the application of a full vaccination programme, in both breeding and growing/fattening stock, in regions and farms where the problem exists. It is also suggested the use of inactivated vaccines which contain both serotypes. Finally, it is briefly described the proliferative necrotizing pneumonia (PNP, new atypical form of SI) which in combination with the porcine respiratory and reproductive syndrome (new pig disease/PRRS) and the SI consist a new threat of the modern pig industry
