Clinical and clinicopathologic evaluation in 14 dogs with presumed idiopathic epilepsy

In the present study 14 dogs were selected on the basis of their history indicating idiopathic epilepsy and with a follow-up period extending from one to three years. The dogs had been admitted to the Clinic of Medicine, Veterinary Faculty A.U.T. with seizures as the main complaint. All 14 dogs were reported to experience recurrent generalized seizures, being mild in 2 and severe in 12 dogs. Aura was not observed in any of these dogs but postictal period was seen in 7 animals, lasting from 1 to 5 minutes and manifested by behavioural changes and various neurological signs. Interictally, the epileptic dogs have had normal neurologic and funduscopic examinations, the latter performed only in 6 animals. The biochemical and hematological changes were, at most, non important and no abnormalities were also seen in either the cerebrospinal fluid or the whole blood lead concentration which were examined in 5 and 12 dogs, respectively. In those 8 cases, where anticonvulsant medication (phenobarbital) was instituted, seizures were completely controlled in 6 and partially in 2 animals. Six of these dogs are still alive and clinically normal, whereas 2 died in traffic accidents. From the rest 6 dogs left untreated, 5 are still seizuring intermittently and one was lost to follow-up
