Incidence of Campylobacter jejuni/coli in bovine, sheep and suine carcasses

A total of 335 carcasses (172 bovine, 67 sheep and 96 swine) processed in slaughterhouses of the Thessaloniki area were examined for the presence of Campylobacter jejuni/coli. Swabs samples were obtained from the intestinal contents, carcass surfaces, liver, kidneys and tongue. Preston broth and Campylobacter agar base (OXOID) with antibiotics and FBP were used for the isolation of the microorganism. Campylobacter spp. was isolated from 25 bovine, 3 sheep and 22 swine carcasses. A total of 86 strains were obtained. According to the biochemical scheme of Skirrow and Benjamin, 91.86% of the isolated strains were C.jejuni, while the rest (8.13%) were C. coli.
