Meat industry is considered, even taking account of a number of factors, the most important sector of Hungarian food industry. It provided 19.2 percent of the gross value poduced. 15.2 percent of gross value of fixed assets and 17.7 percent of employment of the food industry in 1992. The majority of the firms of the sector got into grave difficulties as a joint result of a number of causes, at a time when privatisation is prominent. The paper tries to support joint handling of interrelated problems of stabilization and privatisation
