[The market for Hungarian wines]

Hungary produces 4-5 million hectolitres of wine annually. The export is not and not going to be more than 14-15 o/o, so producers have to sell the rest of it on the domestic market. But even domestic market is in danger. The average consumption has dropped to 28 l/year and at the same time French and Italian wines started to flow in. Besides a lot of wine frauds have been going on and they have shaken the trust of consumers. A new Act on wines has long been due. The market for special quality wines is very small in Hungary; not many producers manage to penetrate into it. Privatization has created new types of distribution systems. Trend analysts predict that chain-store companies are going to take over the domestic retail market. Since wine is mostly a covenience product (that is consumers don't spend much time on searching for it), only those producers can hope good business in the future who can secure shelf space for their products at as many stores as possible
