Sugar pea is a relatively new type of green peas but its popularity is rapidly increasing. There are several differences between sugar peas and common green peas: (1) Sugar peas have higher sugar content and their pod is edible as well. (2) Their yield capacity is 2-3 times higher then that of the green peas. (3) Their growth is more vigorous. They can grow as high as 1.8-2.0 m. (4) After picking the tenderness of the pod lasts only for a short time. Cultivation: Sugar peas need more space, nutrition and water then green peas. Support system is essential, 1.5 m height has proved to be the best. Ripening is continuous, so is harvesting. Picking is done by hand. There are two groups of varieties: "snap" and "sugar". "Snap" varieties can be harvested when the seeds are well developed, "sugar" varieties must be picked when the pods are still flat and the seeds are soft. Since there is no demand for canned sugar peas yet only cold storage plants are used to make frozen products. After washing they cut the tips of the pods
