Cytological studies on the effect of gamma rays on the spermatogenesis in the Ephestia cautella (Walker) larvae (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

The fig moth, Ephestia cautella (Walker) is an important store-date pest which lives on various types of dates causing great damage especially the larval stage which is the more deleterious stage. This study showed that there are four larval molts in this insect depending on the head capsule width measurements for each molt when reared under laboratory condition, 24+-1 deg C and 40-60 RH. This study also showed that the total larval period is 14.74 days, and the mean period for the first instar growth is longer than the mean period for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th instar. The study revealed that the larva has longer growth period during the prepupal stage/where the mean period is equal to 4.69 days
