Determination of appropriate seeding rate for promising barley varieties

In order to determine the appropriate seeding rate for three promising barley varieties named C.63, Reyhane-s, and Arass, and also to study their interaction, an experiment using Split-split plot Design was carried out under rainfed condition at Araghee Mahaleh Research Station for three growing season (1988-91). Results showed that there exists a highly significant difference between varieties, while the seeding rates and interaction of variety x seeding rates were not significant. The same results were reported by Simmons et al., in 1982, studying six barley genotypes over two growing season. Growing season had significant effect on varieties but had no effect on other treatments. As a whole Reyhane-s, with seeding rate of 250/m2, was detected as the best combination. Study of yield components revealed that the increment effect of seed rate on grain yield is adjusted by a decrease in number of seeds/spike, (r=-.85). This result emphasizes the finding of Holliday et al., in 1971, that they also observed a negative correlation between seed rate and number of seeds/spike.
