The process of introducing vegetable cultivation in Hokkaido [Japan] upland-field region

The purpose of this paper is to clarify managerial and economic characteristics of the vegetable producing upland farming areas in recent years. The main points mentioned in this paper are as follows: 1) The introduction time of vegetables, varies according to region. The order is based on the agricultural structures. In the earlier regions, there is a larger labor force and more machines. Farms are smaller, and it is difficult to increase the amount of land under cultivation. In addition, agricultural productivity is lower. 2) The regional development of vegetable production is closely related to its organizational activities. 3) As vegetable production has increased, the amount of soybean cultivation has decreased because of the scarcity of labor and overlapping harvest periods. The larger the area of vegetable cultivation, the fewer farms which sold vegetables only to agricultural cooperative. A number of farmers plant vegetables exclusively, but here are some important problems, such as the limited size of agricultural labor force and land conditions
