Amylose content is one of the most important traits in quality breeding of wheat in Japan, because it is a valuable criterion for the selection of genotypes suitable for Japanese noodles. But there are few reports on its heritability, though the information is important to carry out the breeding efficiently. Furthermore, only a few reports have been issued on the application of near-infrared reflectance (NIR) analysis to amylose content, even though the NIR analysis may be a very useful selection method in early generations of large populations because the method is more rapid and easier than Autoanalyzer which is a very popular method at many breeding stations. In this report, heritability of amylose content in two hybrid populations was estimated by selection experiment, and the selection effectiveness of NIR analysis was evaluated using the same populations
