Effect of rates and ratios of nitrogenous and potash fertilizers on tea in the Eastern highlands of Kenya: 3, quality and value

Black quality parameters, sensory evaluation and prices significantly varied with rates of nitrogenous fertilizer, applied as sulphate of ammonia, but were not affected by rates of potash fertilizer applied as muriate of potash. There was a decline in the theaflavins, brightness, flavor index, sensory evaluations and prices of black tea with increase in nitrogen fertilizer rates. Although application of nitrogen fertilizer produces yield benefits, quality and overall value of the product should be considered when deciding the correct rate of application. For seedling tea, yielding about 2,000kg mt/ha/year, application of less than 100kg N/ha/year was determined, to produce highest profit, provided tea market was bouyant. Such rate for maximum profit could be increased by strict controls in manufacturing expenditure
