The new wheat cultivar "Akitakko" was released in 1992 by tohoku National Agricultural Experiment Station, Morioka, Japan. This cultivar was selected by the pedigree method from the cross of Tohoku 143 (later registered as Wakamatsukomugi)/Tohoku 144 in 1976, and was registered as Komugi Norin 137 to the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in 1992. Main characteristics of Akitakko are as follows: 1. Akitakko is a tillering type with slightly short culm and awned spikes, and the kernel is glassy and reddish brown. 2. Akitakko is a winter type and maturity is about 3 days earlier than Kitakamikomugi. 3. Akitakko is moderately resistant to cold and snow endurance and is susceptible to leaf rust, powdery mildew and pre-harvest sprouting. 4. The yield is lightly higher under various cultivation practices than Kitakamikomugi, especially in the case of cultivation with top dressing at the meiosis stage. 5. The flour-milling percentage is higher and grain ash content is lower, and the protein content of the flour is the same as Kitakamikomugi. 6. the water-absorption of farinogram is high but the area of extensogram is not large, and the resistance of extensogram is not strong compared with Kitakamikomugi. 7. Akitakko is well suited for use in noodles among Japanese cultivars, similar to Kitakamikomugi
