The growth of yamamomo (Myrica rubra) and the recovery of forest landschaft on the bare land along the Setonaikai

In order to see the influence of afforesting Myrica rubra as a kind of "manure tree" for the recovery of forest landschaft of the bare land of the granite region along the Setonaikai, the auther studied on the growth of forests which many years ago Pinus Thunbergii (Japan black pine) and Myrica rubra (yamamomo) were planted for erosion control in the Anjinsan experimental area in Omishima Region and in the Ohama surveying area in Imabari city, Ehime Prefecture. 1. M. rubra has generaly a strong life power. 1) M. rubra lives to a great age over 150 years old. 2) The growth of M. rubra is hardly limited in unfavorable district where many kinds of manure trees are short lived and pines result some difference in growth of height. 2. Considering manure tree, M. rubra grows slowly when that is younger age than about fifteen. Nevertheless the M. rubra can help growth of mixed planting pine in bare land. 3. M. rubra is a tallish evergreen tree, and has deep green polished broad leaves. Then the crown approaches a roundish corn in shape and covers over the 60% of surface of the bare land after eight years, therefore, the mixed forest of this M. rubra should makes up a valuable inventive design. 4. For labor saving of tending after afforestation by the rehabilitation work for the bare land of the granite region along the Setonaikai, Pines and manure trees not plant alternately in a horizontal line of hillside but Pines and M. rubra must be planted alternately between upper step and next lower step, namely the same tree species are planted on one step. And then, auther suggests that M. rubra and some small trees, that is, yamatutuji, mitubatutuji, kodemari etc., are arrayed alternately in a horizontal line
