Breeding process and characteristics of "Yuki-geshou", a potting-type azalea [Rhododendron] cultivar for forcing production

The new azalea cultivar "Yuki-geshou" was selected from seedlings derived from the cross of "Seirou" x "Pinokio". "Yuki-geshou" is pure white in color without red spots on the lobes. Flower type is double, with 12 lobes, about 8 cm in diameter. Flowering period of "Yuki-geshou" under minimum night temperature of approximately 10 degrees C from early October occurs in about January. Also cold storage treatment for 50 days at 8 degrees C enable to promote flowering and when the cold storage treatment starts in the middle of August flowering takes place in October. Two to three flowers can be seen at the shoot tip and the percentage of flowering shoots at the plant crown is approximately 70%. The flowers are highly resistant to flower rot diseases (Botrytis cinerea)
