A new zero-erucic rape [Brassica napus] variety "Kizakinonatane"

A new zero erucic rape variety "Kizakinonatane" (Rape Norin 47), released in 1989 and registered as No.3112 in 1992, was developed by the Tohoku National Agricultural Experiment Station in 1989. It was selected form a cross between "Tohoku-72" and "Rapora". This cross was made in 1980 with the aim of combining the productivity of "Tohoku-72" and the property of zero erucic acid of "Rapora". The zero erucic acid plants were selected at the F4 generation. The breeding was done by the pedigree method from F4 to F9. The maturity of "Kizakinonatane" is medium late, 1-2 days later than "Kamikitanatane" at Morioka, 2 days earlier than "Kamikitanatane" at Aomori Prefecture, and 1 day later than "Taisetsunatane" at Hokkaido. The yielding ability of "Kizakinonatane" is higher than those of "Kamikitanatane" and "Taisetsunatane". "Kizakinonatane's" resistance to logging, sclerotinial disease and to snow damage is strong. The oil content of "Kizakinonatane" is 2-4% higher than that of "Kamikitanatane" and the glucosinolate content of "Kizakinonatane" is as high as "Kamikitanatane". "Kizakinonatane" was released as the first zero-erucic rape variety with "Asakanonatane" in Japan in 1989. It is adaptable to the northern part of the Tohoku district and to the Hokkaido district, and was recommended in Aomori prefecture in 1989 and Hokkaido in 1990
