A bacterium which produced beta-mannanase was isolated from soil using copra meal as a crude mannan preparation. The partially purified enzyme solubilized copra mannan and produced mannobiose, mannotriose, and mannotetraose as major products. The enzyme appeared to hydrolyze the unsubstituted beta-mannan domain preferentially
