The background of heavy metal content studies in Latvian soils is reviewed. The indices of heavy metal content are given according to I.Filipovich. These indices are compared with fixed permissible maximum concentration. It is recommended to compare heavy metal content in soils and its changes not only with maximum permissible concentration, but also with maximum risk level that is calculated according to organic matter content and amount of clay particles in each soil type.
