Adoption of Trichogramma evanescens, a biological control of cornborers among corn farmers in Agusan del Norte [Philippines]

The study was conducted to determine the rate of adoption of Trichogramma evanescens among corn farmers in Agusan del Norte [Philippines] to determine the processes or stages which farmers passed through from acquiring the knowledge of the technology to adoption. Out of 135 corn farmers interviewed, 33.33 percent adopted. This indicated a low rate of adoption of Trichogramma evanescens in the province. This was influenced by the level of technical knowledge, information and extension contact of the farmers through agricultural technologist's field visits. The unavailability of trichocards in the locality posed as the main deterrent factor to adoption. Hence, a need to review the distribution scheme of trichocards in the region and province. Corn farmers tended to evaluate the attributes of trichogramma. A large percentage favored trichogramma use because as a biological control it was viewed as not harmful to the environment. They also observed the simplicity in application of the cards. Farmers had also found out that the use of trichocards lessened their cost of production. Thus, majority of the farmers expressed positive attitude towards its use. Meanwhile, the study showed that adopters passed through knowledge, persuasion, decision-making and implementation stages
