Developing coconut-based farming system in Zamboanga del Sur [Philippines]

From Crop Year 1989-1992 (2 1/2 years) coconut based farming systems were conducted at Deluson, Mahayag, Zamboanga del Sur [Philippines] to compare the performance of the farmers practice (coconut monoculture) with the experimental practice (coco + UR [upland rice] + GC [green corn] - PN [peanut] + GC). In 1989-90, experimental practice gave total return of P4,669.30 over the farmers practice with only P1,753.50. The technology shows an MBCR of 2.66. A consistent increase in MBCR was obtained during the one and a half years of the study (1990-92). For crop year 1990-92, experimental practice achieved P18,714.60 total net return which was three times the net return obtained in the farmers practice. The high returns were due to the combined yields of upland rice, green corn and peanut. The technology is now ready for barangay [village] piloting
