Suitability and stability of performance of sweetpotato varieties on sandy, clay and peat soils

A total of nine improved clones developed through UPM breeding program, and one check variety, Bukit Naga, were evaluated in four locations; Kuantan, Pahang (sandy bris soil), Perlis (sandy clay), Serdang (UPM), Selangor (sandy loam) and Batu Pahat, Johor (peat). The result showed a significant variety x location interactions for yield, tuber number, mean tuber weight and brix (percent). Sandy soils were more favorable for sweetpotato compared to peat and clayey soils. One variety, UPMSS5, consistently gave high yield in all locations. It gave the highest yield in Kuantan, Serdang and Perlis which have sandy soils. In peat soil, it ranked fourth after UPMSS7, Bukit Naga and UPMSS10. Sweetpotato varieties can be classified into two groups in terms of stability. The first group comprises of varieties with a stable number of roots but unstable root size. Varieties under this category are normally high yielders. The second comprises of varieties with stable root size but tend to produce less roots under unfavorable environmental conditions. Such varieties normally produce lower yield. Low- to moderate-yielding varieties were found to be more stable in performance compared to high yielding varieties
