Genetic variation in seed proteins of the Genus Solanum
1994
Las Marias, R.M. (Ateneo de Zamboanga (Philippines))
Genetic variation of eighteen accessions of Solanum belonging to four species namely: aethiopicum, melongena, nigrum, and surattense, locally collected were analyzed using SDS-PAGE for their seed proteins. Four different banding patterns distinct for each species were observed suggesting a wide genetic base in the genus Solanum. Type 1 was exhibited by S. melongena, type 2 by S. surattense, type 3 by S. aethiopicum, and type 4 by S. nigrum. The degree of relationship between S. melongena and S. aethiopicum was closer compared to the other wild relatives based on the similarity of band patterns of the two species. Bands distinct for each species were identified and are useful molecular markers for plant breeders
