Impact of research-NGO [non-government organizations] linkage: a case study in Bangladesh

The national agricultural research institutes are mandated to conduct research and generate technologies in the experiment stations as well as on-farm level. Technology transfer to the clientele groups in Bangladesh is principally the joint activity of the research institutes, government organizations and numerous local and international NGOs [non-government organizations]. Example of research-NGO linkage for technology generation, dissemination and its impact involving Bangladesh Livestock Research Institutes and Proshika is cited. Favorable impacts of this linkage are: 1) development of sense of understanding and tripartite participation involving research-NGO-farmer in technology verification and dissemination, 2) enhancement of income for the landless/marginal farmers and women through economic beef fattening, dairy cow rearing with improved management, rearing goat at stall-fed condition, rearing improved chicken as layer and broiler, rearing high yielding ducks under scavenging system with low cost energy supplementation, and 3) development of technical knowledge for the Proshika staff and farmers. Linkage of other component research institutes with NGOs is called for to develop, test and transfer package of system-based sustainable agricultural technologies augmenting income and welfare of the rural smallholder farming communities of Bangladesh.
