Lead uptake and growth responses in the aquatic ferm, Salvinia sp.

Salvinia sp. plants were grown in half-strength Hoagland solution amended with 0, 2, 4 and 8 g/cu.m lead [Pb in the form of (NO3)2]. High Pb levels caused a significant delay in doubling time and the appearance of chlorotic and necrotic fronds. The degree of accumulation of heavy metals decreased with increasing Pb levels in the solution. Plants exposed to Pb also had lower fresh weights and chlorophyll and protein contents of mature fronds but nevertheless seemed to be able to tolerate the high levels of the heavy metal. These responses may indicate the potential use of these plants as lead scavengers in freshwater habitats
