Water-based formulation of butachlor: rate and time of application in broadcast-seeded wetland rice and effect on selected common varieties

Rice crop stand in the experiment at Bay, Laguna [Philippines] was not significantly affected by application of butachlor from 0.60 to 0.96 kg/ha within six weeks after herbicide application. Time of butachlor application significantly affected crop stand, crop height, tiller number, and grain yield. Degree of weed control based on counts and weights increased with higher butachlor application rates and control was generally better at 28 than at 42 DAS [days after sowing]. Weed competition for the first 42 days reduced tiller production by 22.0 percent while season-long competition reduced grain yield by 40.0 percent. In the trial conducted at Victoria, Laguna [Philippines] application of 0.96 kg/ha butachlor reduced crop stand at 4 WAT [weeks after herbicide treatment] by 32 percent but the rice plants recovered from the injury and gave yields comparable with HW 2x. Weeds in the experimental area significantly reduced tiller number, number of productive tillers and grain yield. Yield reduction due to weeds ranged from 42 to 47 percent
