Enzyme supplementation of feed grains in broiler diets

Results obtained showed a marked improvement in the apparent coefficient of digestibility and consequently an increased metabolizable energy content of the feed grains when enzymes were added. Feed consumption of birds fed with either corn:wheat or corn:barley diet decreased significantly (P0.01) with the addition of enzymes. Greatest reduction in feed consumption among broilers fed corn:wheat diet was observed in those given Kemzyme while among broilers fed corn:barley diet, greatest reduction in feed consumption was observed in those given optizyme and because of the reduced feed intake, there was also a reduction in the metabolizable energy, crude protein, lyzine and methionine + cystine intake of the birds. On the other hand, body weight and feed conversion efficiency was significantly (P0.01) improved with the addition of enzymes. Greatest improvement in body weight among broilers fed corn:wheat diet was observed in those given avizyme while among broilers fed corn:barley diet, greatest improvement in body weight was observed in those given avizyme. Greatest improvement in feed utilization among broilers fed corn:wheat diet was observed in those given Kemzyme while among broilers fed corn:barley diet, most efficient birds were those given avizyme and optizyme. Enzyme supplementation had no effect on the health of the birds as shown by the very low incidence of mortality. Similarly, income over feed and chick cost was improved with the addition of enzymes
