Valorification of thermal factors through winter crops followed by sugar sorghum, sudan grass or millet, on the irrigated zones from the Danube Plain

During 1988-1990 on the cambic chernozem at Fundulea, under irrigation, researches were carried out regarding intensive crop systems made up of winter cereals or of two Italian ryegrass crops, followed by sugar sorghum for forage, Sudan grass or forage millet, as second crop. It was noticed that sugar sorghum and Sudan grass seeded on its own plot makes use of under 60 percent from the thermal supply. An optimum alternative is that of Italian ryegrass, used in 2 cuts followed as second crop by Sudan grass, used in 2 cuts. After winter barley sugar sorghum for silo is an economic alternative, the plants reaching the milking stage, when they may be preserved for silo till frost coming. Sudan grass and sugar sorghum are economically produced on the fields where wheat has been early harvested. On the areas where wheat has been later harvested or after certain crops harvested till the end of July, when 750-850 degrees, active degrees are accumulated till frost coming, Sudan grass and forage millet give economic forage yields, destinated to hay and semihay production.
