Salt tolerant cell lines of alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) have been selected out of cultivars Triumf and Kane. The selection was made by incorporating 1,0 percent in culture media. Regeneration rates after salt stress were drastically reduced, all the selected lines failing to produce somatic embryos. Therefore another experimental approach was used, namely the culture of somatic embryos on saline media (cultivars Kane and KS 206). About 10 percent of the selected somatic embryos survived on the media containing 1,0 percent NaCl. The authors consider that this approach could reduce the problems related to difficult regeneration from selected cell lines.
