Interaction of barley Hordeum vulgare L. and rye Secale cereale L. genomes with genomes of different wheat species in intergeneric hybrids: cytogenetic characteristics

The results of a comparative cytogenetic analysis of intergeneric hybrids between wheat Triticum aestivum, T. timopheevii, and T. durum and rye Secale cereale (ABDR, ABR, AGR), on the one hand, and wheat and barley Hordeum vulgare (HARB, HAB, HAG, AGH), on the other, are presented. For all wheat-barley hybrids, in contrast to wheat-rye hybrids, instability of the chromosome number in sporogenous tissue was demonstrated: - hypo-, hyper-, and polyploid microsporocytes are observed. It was concluded that variability in the chromosome number in sporogenous tissue results from interaction between the barley H and wheat genomes in the synthesized hybrid genome. Hybrids obtained from all of the genome combinations studied have a low frequency of chromosome conjugation. In wheat-barley hybrids from all of the genome combinations, the average number of ring and rod bivalents are values of the same order, while in wheat-rye hybrids rod bivalents prevail. It was suggested that, in microsporocytes of wheat-barley hybrids, ring bivalents are formed by homologous chromosomes in pseudoeuploid cells with elimination of certain chromosomes and duplication of others
