Pogacar, J. (University of Ljubljana, Biotechnical Faculty, Ljubljana (Slovenia). Zootechnical Dept.)
On the base of 53 Simmental bulls breeding value estimates for milk traits and weight gain traits it has been established that by the same selection intensity the highest net income and thus the highest improvement is reached if selection is performed according to index (I12 milk : meat) that now includes 14 traits which are well considered and balanced due to their economic importance. Total net income is reduced by 11 % in one sided selection to milk fat content and by 44 % in one sided selection to weight gain properties. Selection to higher meat yield or higher weight gain is therefore possible and rightful in dual-purpose breeds if all traits, together with milk properties are included, and if present as well as future market economy is considered
