A simulation study for a typical open-ditch drainage system in the region of Zitny ostrov Island, in Slovakia, was conducted. Simulations were conducted for a range of groundwater table management using the water management simulation model. The simulations showed that subirrigation by means of open ditches provides the best practices of water table control. As with any simulation study, those results were for a specific system. The evaluation of actual sites for the potential for controlled drainage and subirrigation will require specific data such as weather, soil properties, topography and drainage channel layouts. The benefits of the alternative water table control practices may change each field specific system. However, mathematical models can assist in these evaluations.
