Soybean mosaic virus-Mae Jo isolate: Seed transmission and reaction of lines and varieties to infection

Soybean mosaic virus (SMV)-Mae Jo isolate was identified on the basis of symptomatology, paticle morphology, transmission, in vitro properties, host range, and serology. The virus caused mosaic and stunting symptoms on infected plants of 44 soybean lines and varieties and seeds collected from those infected plants showed mottling symptom at the rates of 1.06-96.97 %. The percentages of SMV transmission obtained from those seeds were 0-29.63 % and there was no association between seed coat mottling and transmission of SMV by seed. Besides, neigher seed coat mottling nor SMV seed transmission was associated with seed germination. From the results of studies on soybean lines and varieties to SMV infection in 1985-1987, Sukhothai I variety and 10 other soybean lines, i.e. PYT 13, PYT 14, PYT 15, 7016, AGS 9, AGS 19, AGS 129, No.8238, 7842-P2-61, 98-10-6, and 7842-61-98-10-6 were found to be immune to infection of the virus. Among those, AGS 19 was immune to seed-coat mottling and Sukhothai I and PYT 13 were considered to be highly resistant to seed-coat mottling.
