Effect of seed vigor on field emergence, growth, and yield of groundnut

Experiment evaluating the effect of seed vigor upon field emergence, plant growth and yield of the two local recommended groundnut cultivars (SK 38 and Tainan 9) and other three promising cultivars (RCM 387, NC 2 and line 615) was conducted during December 1984 to June 1985. Seeds with high, medium, and low vigor levels of each cultivar were sampled for tests of standard germination, seed vigor as determined by first counted germination, germination index, seedling dry weight, modified accelerated aging, and field emergence. Field experiment was conducted at Suwan Farm, Park Chong, Nakorn Ratchasima. The 15 seed lots were planted on ridges spaced 50 cm. apart, with 25 cm. spacing between hills. Three weeks after seedling emergence, the plants were thinned to one plant per hill. Plant height, dry matter accumulation and leaf area were measured at 30, 50, 70 and 90 days after seedling emergence. Yield and yield components were recorded at harvest. In all groundnut cultivars, seed vigor affected field emergence of the seedlings. Seeds with high vigor gave rapid plant growth and development during early growth stage, but no difference in yield and yield components was obtained from plants deriving from different vigor level seeds. In this experiment, thinning to a uniform stand was done, which might account for no yield difference among different seed vigors.
