Effects of rates and time of side dressing urea fertilizer on yield and some agronomic characters of waxy corn (Zea mays var. ceratina)

Waxy corn (Zea mays L.) cultivar "Bye-sri" was planted from November, 1987 to January, 1988 at the experimental field of the Faculty of Agriculture, Bangpra, to determine the effects of rates and times of side dressing urea fertilizer on yield and some agronomic characters. The plants were applied with three levels of urea fertilizer (0, 15, and 30 kg/rai) at different stages of growth (15, 20, 25 and 30 days after emergence). Urea at 15 and 30 kg/rai significantly increased fresh ear weight compared to zero kg/rai. Urea application at 15-20 days after emergence significantly increased fresh ear weight compared to 30 days after emergence. Some agronomic characters and LAI (leaf area index) of waxy corn were not significantly affected by both rates and stages of urea application but HI (harvest index) significantly increased when side dressing urea at 15 and 20 days after emergence compared to 25 and 30 days. Closed positive correlation was observed between fresh ear weight and HI (r=0.99) but negative correlation was also observed between fresh ear weight and LAI (r=-0.80).
