The effect of rate and time of application of nitrogen fertilizer on growth and yield of sugar cane on two soil types in Trinidad

The utilization of nitrogen in sugar cane for growth and its effects on yield were examined on 2 soil types used for growing sugar cane in Trinidad. Princes Town clay and Talparo clay having alkaline and acid soil reaction respectively. Increasing rate of N applied together with time of N application in single and split applications were investigated. On both soil types, increasing rate of N above 52 kg N/ha did not improve height, tillering. LAI, or dry biomass production was not beneficial to yield of tonnes of cane or sugar. Sugar cane produced greater height, more tillers, higher LAI and more biomass of cane and yielded more tonnes of cane and sugar when N was applied in 3 equal splits as compared with either single or other split applications. Time of application did not significantly affect either growth or yield on Talparo clay.
