Populations of Acipenseridae prior and after the construction of the HEPS [hydroelectric power system] Djerdap 1 and 2 [Yugoslavia]

As a results of construction of the HEPS (hydroelectric power system) Djerdap 1 and 2 the upstream migrations of the anadromous fishes Acipenseridae and Clupeidae have been obstructed in the Djerdap area (Yugoslavia). The consequence was an evident decrease in number of their spawning populations in the annual catch after the construction of the HEPS Djerdap 2, which represents the present distribution borderline of the Black Sea migrants. However, in order to protect commercially extremely important fish species, a joint action of all interested Danubian countries is necessary.
