Syringa vulgaris L., autochtonous, endemic and relict species of the south-east Europe, were examined in eastern Serbia (Yugoslavia), within the community Carpineto-orientalis Quercetum mixtum syringetosum. In this area, the community is degraded and suppressed by the bush vegetation. The obtained results have pointed out how much dinamics of water quantity in leaves, transpiration intensity, water saturation deficit and osmotic values of the cell sap are mutually caused, and how their amplitudes are dependent on phenophase and morphological and anatomical characteristics of leaves as well as on changes of the factors of environment. Syringa vulgaris expressed a very good adaptation to the ecological conditions of the habitats examined.
