Variability of stomata number on the leaves of black poplars and their hybrids

Leaf samples have been taken from the clones Populus nigra, Populus nigra x Populus maximowiczii, Populus euramericana, and Populus deltoides one-year cuttings. The results point out that the clones belonging to the same group by their taxonomic relationship, show great inter-clonal variability. However, the values of the ratio adaxial-abaxial have proved to be sufficiently specific for the above clone groups. The clones of black poplar and its hybrids have the smallest values of this ratio, and the clones of eastern cottonwood have the greatest values. The clones of Euramerican poplars have intermediary properties. The clones of the progeny from spontaneous pollination of the Populus deltoides in the genetic collections with several poplar species show greater inter-clonal variability.
