Specific-purpose foods are often suggested by veterinarians in the treatment of many diseases in companion animals. From 01/O7/95, the directories of the European Community are applied. The present paper gives a reading of these directories and comments on the characteristics of these foods, the specific-purpose objectives and their use. Finaly, a dietetical approach of obesity is described using the different types of specific-purpose foods actually on the market.
