A commented preliminary checklist of the aphids (Homoptera Aphididae) of Pakistan and their host plants

A survey of the aphids of Pakistan has been organized in the framework of a research programme on the transmission of virus diseases to seed potato crops produced in different parts of this country. Nearly 300 aphid species are now in the records and about 60 percent of them are mentioned for the first time for this country. However, the present contribution to the knowledge of the aphid fauna of Pakistan hardly involves half of the total number of species to be expected. A biogeographic general survey shows the great interest of this area placed at the cross-roads of, and bearing elements of Saharo-Sindhian, Irano-Turanian, Indian and East-Palearctic origin; the importance of the Himalayan range as a centre of evolution of the Aphidoidea is underlined by the wealth of (in part still undescribed) endemic species. As far as possible, host plants, life cycle and general geographic distribution are given for every species. A few new taxonomic data are included where considered necessary (such as Aulacorthum delphiniae, syn. nov. of Nasonovia jammuensis, Indoidiopterus syn. nov. of Neotoxoptera, Neotoxoptera geranii comb. nov.).
