Epidemio-surveillance of rabies in Belgium: recrudescence in 1994

In 1994, rabies was confirmed in 43 foxes and 18 domestic animals collected in a border region in southern Belgium. These cases demonstrated a reinfection in an area previously freed from rabies by fox vaccination campaigns. Two campaigns of fox vaccination in a restricted area carried out in 1994 were not able to stop the spread from initial outbreak. Several factors, e.g. the high density of fox population, could explain a too low rate of vaccine-bait uptake. Regarding the current epidemiological situation, alternative strategies of bait distribution are proposed.
