[Effect of rates and place of application of nitrogen fertilizers on the growth and yield of McIntosh and Spartan apple trees]

The application of N fertilizer (60 or 120 kg N/ha) to the whole area of McIntosh and Spartan orchard (herbicide strip plus grassed alley) had the same effect on nitrogen content of the leaves, tree growth, fruit set, fruit yield and dry matter and sugar content of the fruits as the application of the fertilizer to the herbicide strip only at the same rate basis. No significant differences between 60 kg and 120 kg N/ha in their effects on parameters studied were found. It is advisable to apply N fertilizer to the herbicide strip only
