In 1986, a programme was initiated to breed disease resistant apple varieties. The aim is to combine outstanding fruit quality, good yield and stable disease resistance. The first selections are being released now for advanced testing in Switzerland and abroad. The programme follows two lines. The first line aims at creating high quality resistant varieties suitable for commercial production. The second line aims at incorporating new sources of resistance and new aspects such as compact tree habit
