The influence of seed maturity at harvest and drying method on the embryo, alpha-amylase activity and seed vigour in rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Rice seed of cv. BG 400-1 was harvested either after the attainment of maximum seed dry weight (25 % moisture content on a fresh weight basis) or at harvest maturity (17 % m.c.), and then dried either slowly under shade (70 %-90 % interception of light) or rapidly in full sunlight. Neither the stage of seed development at harvest nor drying method had any influence on the vigour of fresh (unaged) seed, which exhibited similar final germination, time of onset and rate of germination, and alpha-amylase activity. However, germination performance was reduced after aging, and to a greater extent in seed harvested earler rather than that harvested later. Radicle extension was closely correlated with alpha-amylase activity and it is suggested that this may be a rate limiting step in germination
