This paper examines the relationship between agricultural land ownership and land use in mountain regions in Switzerland. A brief outline of the agricultural structural changes and migration is first presented. It is followed by an examination of the determinants of land ownership. The empirical material provides information on land ownership in the mountain communities Vals, Iserables, and Trub. Owners are classified into categories. A comparison between 1980 and 1994 was possible for Vals. For Iserables and Trub survey data were available only for 1994. On the one hand, the analysis reveals that land ownership is continuously fragmented everywhere. On the other hand, it is this fragmentation that hinders possible structural improvements
