[Avoiding effluent losses in maize silage]

Two maize varieties (Eclat and Senator) were harvested at two different maturity stages (25 and 30 % dry matter content) and ensiled in 9 cubic metre silos. During the first four months the silage with a lower DM content produced more than twice as much effluent (66 and 54 l/t) as the silages with higher DM contents (28 and 22 l/t). In the early-cut silage one third of the effluent was produced within ten days, whereas in the late-cut silages it took about four weeks to produce the same amount. In all silages the effluent produced on the first day after ensiling was very rich in sugar (480 to 680 g per kg DM). Although the DM content and ear proportion of the two varieties were similar at ensiling, the effluent production of Eclat was 20 % higher. This difference can be explained by the lower crude fibre content and higher density of Eclat
