[Rapeseed and rapeseed presscake in pig feeding]

Ground rapeseed and high-fat rapeseed presscake were tested in four long-term experiments (ad libitum feeding) with a total of 98 pigs. Rapeseed (RS) contained 20 mmol glucosinolates/kg dry matter (DM), rapeseed presscake (RPC) 19 mmol/kg DM. The proportion of the tested rapeseed products varied from 0 (control) to 15 %. At 150 g per kg diet, moisture and heat treated RS or RPC was also given. Feed intake and liveweight gain were decreased at 15 % dietary RS or RPC. A lower level (5 % and 10 %) was tolerated by pigs without performance depression, but the thyroid weight was increased. Degrading glucosinolates to one tenth of initial content stopped the performance depression. Pig diets must not contain more than 2 mmol/kg glucosinolates, which corresponds to 10 % rapeseed meal usually available on the market. Higher proportions of RS or RPC require water heat treatment, which activates rapeseed-own myrosinase and leads to drastic glucosinolate degradation
